It’s that time of year again: if you haven’t been to the gym in a while, you’re probably preparing to convince yourself to go in January in pursuit of your New Year’s resolution to get fit, lose weight, or be more active. Here at Alter’d Core, we welcome new members of all experience levels, and we’re excited to help you reach your goals with the one-of-a-kind Lagree Fitness Method! The first step to that sense of achievement, however, is setting the right kind of goals. In today’s blog, we’ll be talking about how to create a New Year’s Resolution you can live up to. Specific

Many people make goals like the ones we mentioned earlier: get fit or lose weight. The biggest problem with those “goals”? They are too vague, which not only leaves a lot of room for perceived failure or success, but can also make it hard to follow through when you don’t have a clear path forward. A good goal – or New Year’s resolution – is specific. If you want to get fit or lose weight, make sure you pick a specific activity or number to focus on, like lose 10 pounds or do 10 pull-ups.

Measurable

Hand in hand with specificity comes the ability to measure your progress. If you decide you want to lose 10 pounds or be able to do 10 pull-ups, you know how close you are to achieving your goal at any time, and how far you have to go. This can help you stay on track when you feel unmotivated, or give you hope when you don’t feel like you’re making progress. Try keeping track of the activities you do in pursuit of your goal and periodically check your progress — once you’re on a roll, and you can see how much you’ve advanced, you won’t want to stop!

Achievable

The start of the new year is a time when many people make big plans and big promises. There is nothing wrong with being ambitious, but if you want to make a New Year’s resolution you can actually keep, then it’s important to be realistic! If you haven’t been very active in the past year, and you know that you have a lot on your plate that will cut into your training time, then resolving to run a marathon might be more of a stretch than you can handle. You want to choose a goal that is challenging, but within reach. We encourage you to start small with a 5K or 10K, and then, when you reach that milepost, create a new goal to challenge your new level of fitness!

Relevant

When it comes to any goal, motivation is absolutely essential to success. With that in mind, make a resolution to do something you truly care about for the new year. If you hate running, find another milestone that aligns with something you find fun and interesting, like making progress in your Alter’d Core classes! Think about what you truly want to achieve and why, and then pick a goal that is relevant to those points. You’re likely to find much more success with achieving your goals if you work within these guidelines.

Time-Sensitive

One of the most important parts of setting a goal – and reaching it – is giving yourself a deadline. You should decide on a set timeline for achieving your New Year’s resolution to help yourself stick with it and track your progress. You can make that deadline next New Year’s if you want, but an even better strategy is to break up your goals into smaller milestones with a timeline for each. Remember to be specific with this step, too! “Swimsuit season” is too malleable a time goal. Choose a date or a certain number of days, weeks, or months and make it as non-negotiable as you can without jeopardizing your health.
